Aumiller<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">Is technology making us barefoot, dumb and depressed?\u00a0 Now I have warned you before, there is no single answer for causes.\u00a0 And that is assuming people are dumber today than usual, which could be a false assumption (although the argument is looking pretty good with the whole political situation in America).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">So, here\u2019s the rub:\u00a0 there was a study that a social psychologist did by placing a cell phone on the table.\u00a0 <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"715\" data-permalink=\"http:\/\/policepsychologyblog.com\/?attachment_id=715\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/policepsychologyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Camera-1.jpg?fit=400%2C266\" data-orig-size=\"400,266\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Psychology | camera\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;Police psychology, camera, police stress&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/policepsychologyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Camera-1.jpg?fit=400%2C266\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-715 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/policepsychologyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Camera-1.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/policepsychologyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Camera-1.jpg?resize=300%2C200 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/policepsychologyblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Camera-1.jpg?w=400 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The mere presence of the phone made the conversation less personal and less complete.\u00a0 Further studies show that if there are seven college kids at a table, only three will be involved in a conversation at any one time.\u00a0 Maybe four.\u00a0 The rest will be on their phones.\u00a0 And finally, studies at Kent State University show for 500 cell phone using kids, at different levels of use, the high frequency cell phone users tended to have a lower GPA, higher anxiety, and lower satisfaction with life (happiness) relative to their peers.\u00a0 \u00a0Let me TEXT that to you while it sinks in.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">Now as cops, you will probably add there also is a high level of fender reconstruction, quick braking and brain damage from impact of head-to-windshield.\u00a0 But there were even scarier details in the real studies of the \u201ctechno-trapped individuals,\u201d psychologists could tell the ones who were locked into their cell phones either with games, internet, texting or YouTube before even interviewing them, just by a 5-minute observation.\u00a0 Apparently, it changes their behavior to an observable level.\u00a0 Ouch!\u00a0 Add to that the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified cell phone exposure at the same level as coffee and power lines. (Of course, that hasn\u2019t stopped coffee drinking).\u00a0 So, they are getting \u201ccell phoners\u201d someway, either through low paying jobs from the GPA, severe anxiety, suicide or cancer. Have we heard this before?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">In the 30\u2019s and 40\u2019s phonographs were going to ruin the morals of the generation as they played their \u201cswing\u201d music.\u00a0 In the fifties and sixties, parents complained about TV and how sitting too close caused eye damage and cancer.\u00a0 It must have really caused eye damage because those of us who were around in the 50\u2019s and 60\u2019s can\u2019t see so well anymore, especially up-close.\u00a0 Or that might just be aging.\u00a0 In the seventies, it was the music from our 8-tracks and cassette tapes and listening to hard rock that was going to cause us to go deaf.\u00a0 We went back to ruining the morals in the 80\u2019s with the video games like Missile Command, Donkey Kong and Tetris destroying our kids.\u00a0 All they wanted to do was go to arcades and feed quarters into machines.\u00a0 That was as addictive as gambling they said.\u00a0 Game Boys came in the 90\u2019s and that was awful what that did to a generation not listening to their parents and watching a little screen.\u00a0 Then, in the late 90\u2019s and early 2000\u2019s, Grand Theft Auto destroyed those generations.\u00a0 Now we got cell phones, Minecraft and Roblox.\u00a0 How will we ever survive?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">Artificial intelligence, holographic street scenes, and Virtual Reality interaction is probably next.\u00a0 Those will blow you out of the water.\u00a0 Virtual streets with real time updates.\u00a0 Imagine investigating a crime without leaving your detective desk.\u00a0 Taking in a lecture with a mini-professor on your desk.\u00a0 We\u2019ll probably be around to see it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">Simplicity is balance.\u00a0 All life needs a balance.\u00a0 The good news is research shows putting kids in a camping situation, causes them to turn it around.\u00a0 After a couple of days with friends, they don\u2019t crave their cell phones.\u00a0 Older kids can take up to a week.\u00a0 You need some cell phone free days, but there needs to be some tolerance for them during other days.\u00a0 Reaching balance creates a lot of in-fighting between parents, but you need to reach an accord.\u00a0 The best thing is to replace the device with attention or a craft, or for older kids a jobs or videos of something they are interested in.\u00a0 If you\u2019re traveling, a little more cell-phony is tolerated.\u00a0 For certain, no devices before children go to bed.\u00a0 Waking up in a calm state is a different story, but never let the device interfere with the activity of the day getting started.\u00a0 Don\u2019t ever replace a device with Latin or Hebrew lessons.\u00a0 That\u2019s a fight waiting to happen.\u00a0 Or Math, or writing a paper.\u00a0 It can be a reward for the less desired activity, but not a prelude.\u00a0 This is all common sense, but read it again because this is where I find most problems start in a family.\u00a0 Inconsistency with simple rules.\u00a0 Common sense is not so common in application.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">So, does the cell phone make you Barefoot, Dumb and Depressed?\u00a0 Well there is some argument for being dumber (lower GPA) and definitely depressed is shown in studies.\u00a0 Teens are prone to periods of depression anyway.\u00a0 High cell phone usage should be curbed, it changes behavior for the worse, but little argument exist for eliminating the cell.\u00a0 Kids have always had something and this is the \u201csomething\u201d of the times.\u00a0 As far as \u201cBarefoot\u201d I just threw that in there because it sounded good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">Be safe out there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Site Administrator:\u00a0 <em>Gary S.
